Comprehensive Physical Exams Q & A
What are comprehensive physical exams?
A comprehensive physical exam is a routine medical procedure in which your primary care physician evaluates your child’s overall health. A physical exam also gives you the opportunity to discuss any symptoms or health problems your child is currently experiencing.
During a physical exam, you can expect to:
- Ask your doctor questions
- Discuss any immunizations that are due or recommended
- Talk about your child's diet and nutrition, exercise habits, and mental health concerns
- Discuss school progress and issues they may need to address
- Discuss any travel plans, additional immunizations, or medications you need for travel
- Create a comprehensive plan for your child’s college health maintenance
- EKG screening
- Screening bloodwork and urinalysis
- Routine vision and hearing screenings
A physical exam also presents an opportunity to update any prescription medications or supplements your child may need.
How do I prepare for my child's comprehensive physical exam?
Getting ready for your child's annual physical exam is easy and hassle-free. To help the process go as smoothly as possible, the medical team recommends you write down a list of the medications your child is currently taking and any unusual symptoms they're experiencing.
If they are a new patient, please bring a copy of their health records and medical history. In addition, discuss with them what they may expect at the doctor’s office.
What happens during my child's comprehensive physical exam?
Your child's annual physical exam starts with the doctor, reviewing their medical history, asking them and their caregiver a series of questions about their general health and well-being.
The exam continues with performing a thorough physical exam, including vision and hearing screenings. Vaccinations are given after the physical exam. Forms for school and camp are completed at the visit.
If you have any concerns during your child's exam, don’t hesitate to speak up. Dr. Agathis is happy to answer any questions you have.
In addition, Dr. Agathis is familiar with school settings and requirements as she is School Physician for 6 schools including Far Hills Country Day, The Somerset Hills School District, Harding Township and Kent Place School in Summit.
